Biography

Courtney Jaye was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and moved to Atlanta, Georgia when she was a freshman in high school. It was at this time she discovered The Grateful Dead and Neil Young, and also began to play the guitar. After becoming immersed in the bohemian culture, she headed out west and lived in mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona. She worked as an acupuncturist's assistant by day and performed in her first bluegrass band at night.

At the age of 20, she bought a one-way ticket to the island of Kauai, Hawaii. It was here that she began to explore the Hawaiian culture and became fascinated by traditional Hawaiian music. Knowing she would one day return to The South Pacific, she then decided to move to the legendary music town of Athens, Georgia, where she continued to perform and develop her songwriting skills.

Over the years, she has lived in other music cities such as Austin, Los Angeles, and finally Nashville, Tennessee. Along the way, she signed her first record deal with Island Records in 2004 and released her first single "Can't Behave" in June 2005. She performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and toured the country on a whirlwind radio promotional tour. She has collaborated with many musicians over the years Gary Louris of The Jayhawks, Peter Hayes of BRMC, Matthew Sweet, Kristen Hall, Rhett Miller, Tift Merritt, Thad Cockrell, and Emily Saliers of The Indigo Girls.

In 2009, Universal Republic Records will be releasing the song "Sweet Ride" as the first single from her new record, "Queen Of Sabotage". It is a record that is a unique blend of Vintage-Hawaiian-Country. Jaye calls it "Tropicalicountry". It features a duet with Ben Bridwell from Band Of Horses and was produced by Jaye and Seth Kauffman.

Influences

Jaye started songwriting as a response to a friend's death. She found catharsis in doing so, and much of her music continues to reflect the events in her life.¹

Jaye's early musical influence was in the form of The Grateful Dead, whom she followed in high school. Later influences include The Beatles, Neil Young, Chris Isaak, and the Brazilian artists Astrud and Bebel Gilberto. Influences from her time on Kauai, Hawaii are also evident in some of her work. ¹
