Drew Blyth Barrymore (born February 22, 1975) is an American actress and film producer. She is the youngest member of the Barrymore family of American actors. She began acting when she was eleven months old. Barrymore made her screen debut in Altered States in 1980. Following her 1980 screen debut in Altered States, she starred in her breakout role in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. She quickly became one of Hollywood's most recognized child actresses, going on to establish herself in mainly comic roles.
At age 13, Barrymore was checked into rehab for several drug habits she had developed from age 9.[1][2] In 1995, she, along with Nancy Juvonen, formed a production company Flower Films. The following year, she made her comeback in Wes Craven's horror film Scream. This was followed by the 1998 romantic comedy The Wedding Singer, starring opposite Adam Sandler. In 2000, Barrymore starred in the film adaption of Charlie's Angels. Subsequently, she has appeared in comedies such as 50 First Dates, Fever Pitch, Music and Lyrics and starred in the drama film Lucky You opposite Eric Bana. Barrymore is currently working on the projects He's Just Not That into You, Beverly Hills Chihuahua, and Everybody's Fine. Since then, she has received a star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2007, Barrymore appeared in the cover of People magazine's 100 Most Beautiful issue.
Biography
Early life
Barrymore was born February 22, 1975 in Culver City, California, the daughter of American actor John Drew Barrymore and Ildiko Jaid Barrymore (née Makó),[1][3] an aspiring actress born in a displaced persons camp in Brannenburg, West Germany to Hungarian World War II refugees. She is of Irish descent on her father's side through an ancestor actor Maurice Costello. Her parents divorced after she was born.[1] She has a half-brother John Blyth Barrymore,[4] also an actor, and two half-sisters, Blyth Dolores Barrymore and Brahma (Jessica) Blyth Barrymore. Her paternal great-great-grandfather, John Drew, was an Irish-born actor who immigrated to the United States in the 19th century.[5]
Barrymore was born into the acting profession, coming from a long line of acting talent extending back nearly 200 years; her great-great grandparents John Drew, Louisa Lane Drew, her great-grandparents Maurice Barrymore and Georgie Drew Barrymore, Maurice Costello and Mae Costello (née Altschuk), and her grandparents John Barrymore and Dolores Costello were all highly successful actors; John Barrymore was arguably the most acclaimed actor of his generation.[1][5] She is the grand-niece of Lionel Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore (to whom Winston Churchill once proposed), and Helene Costello, and the great grandniece of John Drew, Jr., actress Louisa Drew, and silent film actor/writer/director Sidney Drew.[1][5] She is also the god-daughter of director Steven Spielberg.[2]
Her first name, Drew, was the maiden name of her paternal great-grandmother, Georgie Drew Barrymore; her middle name, Blyth, was the original surname of the dynasty founded by her great-grandfather, Maurice Barrymore.[2]
Rise to fame
Barrymore's career began when she auditioned for a dog food commercial at eleven months old.[2] When she was bitten by her canine co-star, the producers were afraid she would cry, but she merely laughed, and was hired for the job.[2] She made her film debut in Altered States (1980), in which she got a small part.[1] A year later, she landed the role of Gertie, the younger sister of Elliott, in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which made her famous.[2] She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1984 for her role in Irreconcilable Differences, in which she starred as a young girl divorcing her parents.[2][6] In a review in the Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert states: "Barrymore is the right actress for this role precisely because she approaches it with such grave calm." He concludes with saying that "The Drew Barrymore character sees right through all of this. She doesn't care about careers, she wants to be given a happy home and her minimum daily requirement of love, and, in a way, the movie is about how Hollywood (and American success in general) tends to cut adults off from the natural functions of parents."[7]
Rebellious era
In the wake of this sudden stardom, Barrymore endured a notoriously troubled childhood. She was already a regular at the famed Studio 54 when she was a little girl, smoking cigarettes at age nine, drinking alcohol by the time she was eleven, smoking marijuana at twelve, and snorting cocaine at thirteen.[1][2] She was in rehab at age thirteen and a second time at fourteen.[1][2] Barrymore later described this period of her life in her 1990 autobiography, Little Girl Lost. Her nightlife and constant partying became a popular subject with the media.[1]
New image
In her late teens, Barrymore forged a new image as she played a manipulative, evil teenage seductress in Poison Ivy (1992), which became a box office failure, but was popular on video and cable.[1][8] That same year, at the age of seventeen, she posed nude for the cover of the July issue of Interview magazine with her then-fiance, actor Jamie Walters, as well as appearing nude in pictures inside the issue.[9] In 1993, Barrymore earned a second Golden Globe nomination in the television movie series, Guncrazy.[6] Barrymore would go on to pose nude for the January 1995 issue of Playboy.[10][11] Steven Spielberg, who directed her in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial when she was a child, gave her a quilt for her twentieth birthday with a note that read, "Cover yourself up".[2] Enclosed were copies of her Playboy pictures, with the pictures altered by his art department so that she appeared fully clothed.[12] She would eventually appear nude in five of her movies during this period. During a 1995 appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman, Barrymore climbed onto Dave Letterman's desk and bared her breasts to him, her back to the camera. The flash was intended to celebrate his birthday.[5] She also modeled in a series of Guess? jeans ads during this time.[13] She underwent breast reduction surgery in 1992, and has said on the subject:

Return to prominence
In 1995, Barrymore starred in the romantic comedy Boys on the Side opposite Whoopi Goldberg and Mary-Louise Parker,[15] and had a cameo role in Joel Schumacher's film Batman Forever, in which she portrayed a glitzy Marilyn Monroe character.[16][17] The following year, she made a comeback in the successful horror film Scream. Barrymore has continued to be highly bankable, and a top box office draw.[1][18] She has been especially adept in romantic comedies, such as Wishful Thinking (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998),[19] Home Fries (1998),[20] Never Been Kissed (1999),[21] 50 First Dates (2004),[22] and Fever Pitch (2005).[23] Summing up Barrymore's appeal, Roger Ebert, in his review of 50 First Dates, describes Barrymore as having a "smiling, coy sincerity", describing the film as "ingratiating and lovable".[24] She has also produced and starred in several films, including Charlie's Angels (2000), a major box office success of 2000.[2][25] After Charlie's Angels, Barrymore had a dramatic role in the comedy/drama Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), where she played a teenage mother in a failed marriage with the drug-addicted father (based on the real-life story of Beverly D'Onofrio).[26] She was nominated for an Emmy in Olive, the Other Reindeer.[27] In Richard Kelly's debut movie Donnie Darko she had the fairly small role of Karen Pomeroy, the title character's English teacher.[26] In 2003, she reprised her role as Dylan Sanders in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.[1][25] Maxim magazine featured Barrymore and her fellow Angels in their "Girls of Maxim"[28] gallery after the launch of the film. Later in 2002, Barrymore appeared in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, alongside Julia Roberts.[29]
On February 3, 2004, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.[30] One of her most recent roles has involved her becoming a recurring character in the hit animated comedy Family Guy as Brian Griffin's shallow girlfriend, Jillian.[31] She has since appeared in four episodes.[31][32][33][34] She was the subject of the 2005 documentary My Date with Drew. In it, an aspiring filmmaker and a fan of Barrymore's, uses his limited resources in an attempt to gain a date with her.[35]
In 2007, Barrymore appeared in the films Music and Lyrics and Lucky You.[36][37] On February 3, 2007, Barrymore hosted Saturday Night Live (SNL) for the fifth time,[25] making her the second female host in the shows history to do so (Candice Bergen being the first) and still remains the youngest celebrity to host the show (Barrymore hosted in 1982 at age seven).[38][39] Barrymore has a worldwide box office gross that stands at over $2.3 billion. It was announced on April 11, 2007 that Barrymore became CoverGirl Cosmetics' newest model and spokeswoman.[41] In April 2007, Barrymore reached No. 1 in People's annual 100 Most Beautiful People list.[42] In May 2007, Barrymore was named Ambassador Against Hunger for the United Nations World Food Programme[43][44] and on March 3, 2008, she donated $1 million to the Programme.[25][45] In June 2007, Gucci announced that Barrymore would be the new face for their jewelry line.[46][47] Barrymore is signed to IMG Models New York City.
Personal life
Barrymore was married to Welsh bartender turned bar owner Jeremy Thomas from March 20 to April 28, 1994.[1][5] Her second marriage was to comedian Tom Green from July 7, 2001 to October 15, 2002.[48][49] Green filed for divorce in December 2001.[49] In 2002, Barrymore began dating Strokes' drummer Fabrizio Moretti, soon after they met at a concert.[1][25] Their five year relationship, however, ended on January 10 2007.[25][50] She most recently dated Justin Long,[51] however, they confirmed their split in July 2008.[52]dead link
In March 2007, former magazine editor Jane Pratt claimed on her Sirius Satellite Radio show that she had a romance with Barrymore in the mid-nineties.[53] This was after Barrymore's own 2004 admission that she considered herself bisexual, commenting: "A woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful. Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else. When I was younger I used to go with lots of women. Totally. I love it".[54]
