History

Before starting Hinder, Winkler (b. October 25, 1981) played in a cover band. He then formed Hinder with Cody Hanson.3 Winkler and Hanson wrote the band's song "Lips of an Angel", with music producer Brian Howes, which peaked at #3 on Billboard Hot 100. Winkler continues to write the bulk of the band's music with Brian Howes and Cody Hanson.

In April 2003, before making it big, Hinder entered the March Bandness contest for Oklahoma City radio station KHBZ-FM (94.7). They made it to the Final Four out of a field of thirty-two, ultimately losing to the OKC group Falcon Five-O. They released their first EP titled Far from Close in 2003 on an independent record label, Brickden Records. It sold about 5,000 copies. The three members then began working on new material in 2004 for their next independent release. These demos caught the attention of several major record labels.4

Extreme Behavior: 2005–2008

After being offered record deals by Atlantic, Roadrunner, and Universal Records, Hinder signed with Universal Records in 2005. The Brian Howes written and produced album, Extreme Behavior, was then set for release in the United States. Allmusic called Extreme Behavior one of the year's worst albums4.

Hinder entered the rock scene with their debut single "Get Stoned." The band then toured in support of their album, Extreme Behavior. The band's second single, "Lips of an Angel," did far better on the charts, hitting #1 on several, and garnered international attention. The band's third single,"How Long" continues to receive airplay on several radio stations throughout the U.S.

Extreme Behavior's track "Shoulda" was originally written and recorded by Canadian band Social Code for their A Year At the Movies album, but was scrapped when finalizing the album. Social Code did, however, perform the song multiple times, including at The Mod Club in Toronto, Ontario on May 24, 2007 under the name Shoulda Woulda Coulda5 Hinder re-wrote portions of the song to fit their sound and style and decided to use it on the album.

As a Christmas gift to their fanclub, the Hinder Army, the band recorded their version of the public domain song "A Little Drummer Boy" and released it on their fanclub website.

In 2006, the song Lips of an Angel entered the New Zealand charts and lasted for 41 weeks with 2 weeks at number 1.

Their second song to be released in New Zealand was Better Than Me, which didn't fare as well on the NZ charts, only lasting 3 weeks and peaked at number 16.

In October 2007, Hinder released their limited edition CD/DVD of Extreme Behavior entitled You Can't Make This Shit Up.

On December 21, 2007 Winkler was arrested in Jonesboro, Arkansas on suspicion of DUI after leaving his engagement party.

Take It to the Limit: 2008–present

The first single, "Use Me", from the band's second album, was released on July 15, 2008 and peaked at #3 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks. The new album, Take It to the Limit, was released on November 4, 2008 and marked a change in style in Hinder's music in that it moved the band in a slightly more 80's Rock-influenced direction. They released the second song on their corporate MySpace page on September 13, 2008, called "Without You". Take It To the Limit debuted at #4 on the Billboard 200 with 81,000 sales its first week, besting that of their debut album which was #6 in 2005.

Through late 2008, Hinder headlined the Jägermeister Music Tour with Trapt and Rev Theory also on the bill.

Winkler and Jami Miller (actress–model) were married in Maui, Hawaii on July 30, 2008. He met Miller while filming the music video for Hinder's cover of "Born to Be Wild". She was one of the dancers in the video. The cover of "Born to Be Wild" was done for NASCAR Racing.

In early 2009 Hinder embarked on Motley Crue's Saints of Los Angeles Tour which also included Theory of a Deadman and the Guitar Center contest Winners The Last Vegas.

In July, Hinder embarked on Nickelback's Dark Horse Tour, which ran through Live Nation outdoor amphitheaters with Nickelback, Papa Roach, and Saving Abel.

The band is currently working on their follow-up to Take It to the Limit.

In an interview with NXFM, Hinder claimed that they would send scouts into the crowd at their concerts to pass out VIP passes to good-looking women. They have also been known to have attractive women dress in lingerie and roam the crowd while they are onstage playing.
