A former Jr. Canadian tennis champion, training with weights to help with her tennis performance led to her interest in bodybuilding; Coates can bench press 250 pounds.
She first became interested in wrestling during the Hulk Hogan / Randy Savage / Miss Elizabeth saga in the late 1980s. Coates eventually appeared at WWE Backlash 2005, during the "Masterlock Challenge" segment. After this initial appearance, Coates was signed to a developmental contract with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). However, Coates left the company to work for wXw and refocus her training. Soon after training in wXw, Coates began regularly working for Ohio Valley Wrestling, often facing off with several of OVW/WWE's divas such as Beth Phoenix, Jillian Hall, Mickie James, and Melina Perez. At one point, she was the bodyguard for Jillian Hall. After a stint in OVW, Coates was then assigned to Deep South Wrestling as the Bag Lady. Soon after, Melissa began to undergo an attire change, dressing more diva like and began feuding with Krissy Vaine and Angel Williams, winning all of her matches. However, Melissa's stay in DSW was also short lived and she began touring the independent circuit. In her first appearance on the indy circuit, Melissa won the NWA / GCW Women's Championship from former WCW star Daffney Unger while wrestling for Great Championship Wrestling. Along the way she defeated former WWE developmental talents Tracy Taylor and Trenesha. Coates has made several appearances for Georgia wrestling promotions in a wrestling and non-wrestling role and also ended up on the winning end of several bouts. She currently wrestles for NWA Anarchy as a heel, challenging and defeating male wrestlers in Battles of the Sexes, so far defeating "Skater Boi" Chris King, Wesley "Rabbit" Grissom, Billy Buck and Derek Ryzen, Kid Ego, and others. Coates teamed up with former WWE Deep South talent Tony Santarelli at FRIGHT NIGHT 2007 to defeat Todd Sexton and Wes Grissom. Coates demanded to participate in the ANARCHY Battle Royal December 2007 to determine the top contender for the ANARCHY Television title, but was eliminated when she was caught unaware during an odd interlude with a "Secret Admirer" that had Coates distracted. Was feuding with Bambi at SECW, and has made appearances for AWA:FLA, IWN, and Global Championship Wrestling in Alabama.
Recently, she made an appearance for Women's Extreme Wrestling's recent event entitled "Payback's A Bitch" where she saw action against Amber O'Neal and did a run in during a USA vs. Canada segment in the ring which was done post her match with O'Neal.
