Olivia is a popular female name pronounced oh-LIV-ee-ah. It is a Latinate name, coined by Shakespeare for the rich heiress wooed by the duke in Twelfth Night (1599). He might have derived the name from the olive plant (Latin: 'oliva') or used it as a feminine form of Oliver.¹
