They began performing together in 1997 in Miami, and were managed by their father, Joe "Blue" Smith. Joe Smith is the father of all the original members except for Marcus "Pleause P" Cooper, as stated in an issue of Vibe magazine.Only Spectacular and Baby Blue, and a sister named Destiny M Hamm have the same mother. All were born between 1984 and 1986.2
According to a 2005 story in The Miami Herald, the brothers "were originally called Pretty Rickie and the Maverix, until the country group the Mavericks objected, and the brothers decided 'y' endings are "more masculine" than 'ie.'"3
In 2004, they recorded "Grind On Me" which began to get heavy airplay on Miami radio stations, which lead to a deal with Atlantic Records and national exposure. After signing the deal, the song was re-recorded in the familiar title, "Grind With Me" a less explicit version of their hit single, which lead to their debut album in 2005, Bluestars. The band toured with Omarion and other acts in the Scream Tour IV concert series.4
Their second album, Late Night Special was released in 2007, included the hit singles "On the Hotline" and "Push It Baby" which featured Sean Paul.5
In 2008, Pleasure P left to group to pursue a solo career and was later replaced by Christopher "4Play" Myers and began recording their third album, Eighties Babies, set for release October 14, 2008.6 The first single "Cuddle Up" was released, and features female R&B group Butta Crèame. The second single, "Knockin’ Boots" - a retro remake of the ballad first made popular by Luther Campbell's group H-Town, originally recorded in 1993, was released with 4Play leading the song. Other than the collaboration with Butta Crèame, there are no guest appearances on "Eighties Babies".7 However, the album received internet leakage and has forced the group to record a new album. In a statement released on January 11, 2009, Pretty Ricky has moved forward with plans to record a self-titled album for release later in the year. "80s Babies", which was originally led by the single "Cuddle Up," has been leaked to several blogs and music sites due to the circumstances.8 After several delays it was confirmed that the group was dropped from Atlantic Records.9
Their new album is now set to be self-titled and will include new nember Lingerie. The first single is "Tipsy In Dis Club". It was released on July 21, 2009 as a digital download and peaked at #53 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and #6 at the 106 & Park's Countdown. Three versions of the album will be available: "Clean" "Dirty" and "Chopped & Screwed" (By OG Ron C of Chopstar DJs and SwishaHouse).
