Early life

Scott Storch was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He is an American Jewish entertainment mogul, hip-hop record producer, arranger and keyboardist. He plays the piano, clavinet, violin, bagpipes and he is also an avid horse back rider.

After moving to Cherry Hill, New Jersey where he became the keyboard player for the Philadelphia hip-hop band The Roots, he played keyboards for other Philly artists including Schoolly D and G. Love.

Storch began experimenting with his own productions by making beats for The Roots. He then left the band and learned more about the art of making beats from Dr. Dre and Timbaland. Storch is now one of the most in-demand hip-hop producers today, working on beats for a wide variety of artists. Unlike many of his contemporaries (Kanye West, Pharrell), Storch rarely uses samples in his beats, preferring to create his own music.

Financial collapse

In 2006, Rolling Stone estimated that Storch had earned over $70 million in his career.2 According to a 2007 Forbes article, "Hip Hop Cash Kings," Storch was one of the highest-paid people in the music industry in 2007, having earned $17 million in that year. His fee per track was around $85,000, exclusive of publishing royalties. In July 2008, it was reported that Storch was unable to pay over $500,000 in late property taxes, and a warrant was issued for his arrest for failure to appear at his child-support hearing. According to his attorney, there had been "mismanagement" of Storch's finances.3

Private life

In his private life, he has been romantically linked with rapper Lil’ Kim and Paris Hilton. Despite his flashy appearance wearing enormous amounts of diamond jewelry and driving very expensive automobiles, he prefers a modicum of privacycitation needed, and is relatively shycitation needed compared to fellow hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams or Kanye West, both of whom have become musical stars themselves after becoming successful producers. Scott has a son named Steve who lives with him in Miami. In a recent interview with Stuff Magazine, Storch says he enjoys buying and wearing jewelry that represents powercitation needed. In mid-2006, Rolling Stone magazine reported Storch’s fortune to be worth somewhere near $70 million dollars. On April 16, 2006, Scott and his sometime girlfriend of four years, Dae Daniel Esquire, welcomed his second son, Jalen Storch. In 2008 he privately married his best friend Candace Riley, who he also has three kids with. Scott Storch keeps his life with her and their kids private.

Conflicts

Timbaland

Hip hop producer Timbaland refers to Storch in his single "Give It to Me," singing: "I get a half a million for my beats, you get a couple grand/Never going to see the day that I ain't got the upper hand/I'm respected from California way down to Japan/I'm a real producer and you just the piano man/Your songs don't top the charts, I heard 'em, I'm not a fan." Timbaland confirmed that he was talking about Storch in an interview with MTV presenter Sway Calloway. He said that he would go after the haters on his new album Timbaland Presents Shock Value.4

Storch responded with the track "Built Like That" on February 26, 2007, which features Philadelphia MC Nox. On the track, Storch claims to have been solely responsible for the production of the 2002 Justin Timberlake hit "Cry Me a River," for which he received credit as a co-writer and pianist, but production was solely credited to Timbaland. He also claims that Timbaland's production partner Danja has been responsible for his recent string of hits with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake, and mocks the commercial failure of Timbaland's former Beat Club label. They recently ended their feud. This was confirmed by Timbaland in the final issue of Scratch Magazine.5

Christina Aguilera

The eighth track on the first disc of Christina Aguilera's double album Back to Basics was titled, "F.U.S.S." rumored to stand for "Fuck You, Scott Storch." Storch produced and co-wrote several tracks for Aguilera's previous album, Stripped. Storch was asked to be involved with Back to Basics, but he refused to be a part of the project when Aguilera declined to fly him and his entourage out to her, among other demands, which led to a breakdown of their relationship. "F.U.S.S." was written as a response to the animosity between Aguilera and Storch during the recording of Stripped. In an interview with Maxim, she said, "That’s a way of burying my experience with him. We did great work on Stripped.... When I tried to work with him again, he made uncalled demands. It was disappointing that someone would get affected like that."6

Issues

On April 25, 2009 it was stated on XM channel 66 that Storch was trying to recover from a 3 year cocaine stint that has left him at rock bottom. It was also stated that Storch lost earnings of potentially more than $30 million during that time period.7
