Sunny Leone (born Karen Malhotra on May 13, 1981) is an award winning Indian-American pornographic actress and former Penthouse Pet of the Year. She is a Vivid Girl and one of the few actresses of Indian origin in the pornography industry. She has said that Sunny is her real name and Leone was picked by Bob Guccioni, former owner of Penthouse magazine.^[5]

Early life

Sunny was born in Canada to a Punjabi^[6] Sikh family. Her parents came from India about 25 years ago and applied for American citizenship before she was born. Leone's father was born in Tibet and raised in Delhi, while her mother (who passed away in 2008^[7]) was from a small town called Nahan in Himachal Pradesh.^[8] As a young girl, she was very athletic and played street hockey with the boys,^[1] enjoyed ice skating on a nearby frozen lake and drinking hot chocolate in front of a fire after playing in the snow all day.^[9]

Her parents enrolled her in a Catholic school,where she had her first kiss at 11, lost her virginity (to a basketball player at another school^[10]) at 17,^[8] and found out she was bisexual at 18.^[11] When she was 15, her family received their green card^[8] and migrated to the United States.They first moved to Fort Gratiot,Michigan, then to Lake Forest, California^[10] before finally settling down in Orange County, California fulfilling a dream of her grandparents that all of them be together in one place.^[12] She graduated from high school in 1999 and proceeded to enroll in college.

Career

While studying to be a pediatric nurse in Orange County, a classmate who was an exotic dancer introduced her to John Stevens, an agent who in turn introduced her to Jay Allen, a photographer for Penthouse magazine.^[8] Then in 2001, Sunny was named Penthouse Pet of the Month for the March issue, followed by a feature in the Holiday 2001 edition of Hustler magazine as a Hustler Honey. She has graced the pages of other magazines including Cheri^[13], Mystique Magazine ^[14], High Society, Swank, AVN Online, Leg World, Club International and Lowrider^{[15] [16]}, while her online credits include ModFX Models ^[17],Suze Randall^[18] and Mac & Bumble.^[19]

In 2003, she was declared the Penthouse Pet of the Year and also stared in the video Penthouse Pets in Paradise alongside Tera Patrick and Kyla Cole. In addition to her print work,she had also done pantyhose modelling with Ed Fox and Playtime Videos.In 2005 Adam & Eve appointed her as their West Coast Internet Sales Representative.^[20]

That same year, Sunny signed a three-year contract with Vivid Entertainment with which she transitioned into the world of hardcore pornography, stating that she would only do lesbian scenes.^[1] Her first movie released was titled Sunny^[21] and was released in December 2005. Her next movie Virtual Vivid Girl Sunny Leone was the first interactive title for Sunny had the honor of being the first Vivid Girl to make such a movie.^[22] Taking only four days to film,^[23] the movie won her first AVN award (Best Interactive DVD) and has sold 15,000^[24] copies to date. She followed this with Sunny loves Cher, which featured her first on-screen female ejaculation.

2007 was an important year for Sunny and her career, starting with the January release of The Female Gardner where she stared alongside Daisy Marie and Mikayla. In March she performed a scene in the highly anticipated remake of Debbie Does Dallas ... Again, with Lacie Heart as a cheerleader named Christie. Sunny's last two movies under her contract with Vivid were Its Sunny in Brazil, where she was flown to Brazil to shoot her scenes.^[25] and The Sunny Experiement also staring Monique Alexander and Brea Lynn.^[26] The movies were released in October and December 2007 respectively.

In May 2007, upon re-signing her contract with Vivid for another 6 films, Sunny agreed to perform for the first time with men on camera, but only exclusively with her fiance, Matt Erikson.^[27] That summer she also received breast augmentation (350 ccs of saline in each breast^[4]) and shot her first movie under the new contract titled Sunny Loves Matt. The highly anticipated movie was released in March 2008 and debuted in the top 10 on many adult DVD charts.

In January 2008, she revealed that she was no longer engaged to Erikson and had done scenes with other actors, most notably Tommy Gunn, Charles Dera, James Deen,^[28] and Voodoo.^[29] The movies that have been filmed but yet to be released as of August 2008 are Sunny Extreme, The Other Side of Sunny,^[30] Sunny's Dream and Vivid Red.^[31]

Sunny has also built a sizable online presence with her official website sunnyleone.com along with affiliate sites sunnysmoney.com and sunnysfriends.com. She has managed to leverage her online popularity by striking deals with firms like PPPcard^[32], AdultPokerParty.com^[33], Brickhouse^[34], Flirt4Free^[35], Totemcash^[36] and Imlive^[37] to sell and distribute her content over the internet and other other media. Her websites and business interests are run under her banner company Leone L.L.C.

In addition to appearing in their movies, Sunny has also been part of the Vivid Comedy Tour^[38] as well as modelling for the Vivid Footwear collection.^[39] Sunny has also participated in events like the Vivid/Club Jenna Lingerie Bowl^[40] and Vivid's Hot Rod Night.^[41] Doc Johnson launched a pocket pal in 2006 molded to her vagina.^[42] In addition to her movie career, Sunny is also active on the club circuit and has been the featured dancer at Clubs like The Spearmint Rhino, The Rockstar Lounge and is currently represented by LA Direct Models.

Mainstream Appearances

Sunny's first mainstream appearance was in 2005 when she was a red carpet reporter for the MTV Awards on MTV India. She has also had a cameo in the film The Girl Next Door, performed in Ja Rule's video "Livin It Up" and a video for Kidd Skilly.^[47] Other credits include E!'s "Wild On!" and the Sundance Film Festival's 'After Dark.'^[48]

In addition to filming her scene for Debbie Does Dallas in 2007, Sunny was also part of a Showtime documentary of the same name detailing the production of the movie and the personal lives of its stars.

She has had three appearances on The Howard Stern show, most recently in 2008, where she appeared alongside Joanna Angel and rode a sybian.^[49]

In 2008, Sunny announced that she would be starring in a mainstream action adventure movie titled Pirates Blood which was shot in Oman. The shooting was completed in two weeks and was to be released in Winter 2008.^[50][51]

In 2004 , she was part of "No More Bush Girls", where, along with several other popular adult actresses, they shaved off their pubic hair in protest of the Bush presidency.^[52] In May 2008, she shot a promotional video for Declare Yourself -a nonprofit, nonpartisan voter registration campaign targeting 18-to-29-year-olds.^[53]

Personal life

Before working in the entertainment industry, she first worked at a German bakery,^[23] a Jiffy Lube,^[10] and later a tax and retirement firm.^[3] In June 2006, Leone became an American citizen^[23] but has plans to be a dual citizen of Canada.^[62] Though bisexual, she has stated that she prefers men. In her spare time she is into abstract paintings, horse riding, reading,playing World of Warcraft^[63] and enjoys watching The Simpsons and The Discovery Channel^[64] She currently plays on a women's soccer league team in California.^[1].Her favorite holiday destination is Hawaii^[23],while her favorite cuisine is Italian.^[64]

In separate interviews, she has stated that in ten years time she would like to be married and have started a family, and probably retire from the business by the time she is 30.^[62] Sunny was engaged to Matt Erikson, a vice-president of marketing at Playboy Enterprises,^[6] but broke up in 2008. She is currently dating Daniel Weber, her business partner and guitarist for the band "The Spyderz", which is fronted by Evan Seinfeld.
